Cambodian Students’ Motivation with Regard to Learning English Language: The Case of Hun Sen Peam Ro High School, Prey Veng Province

This research report explores the motivation of Cambodian students to learn English, with a focus on Hun Sen Peam Ro High School, Prey Veng Province. Data were gathered using a quantitative approach. The objectives of the study were to determine the level of student motivation to learn English, to identify whether their motivation was more intrinsic or extrinsic, and to examine whether there was a statistically significant difference in motivation between male and female students. A total of 265 students participated in the study.
The findings indicated that the students were highly motivated to learn English, with extrinsic motivation being stronger than intrinsic motivation. It was also noted that female students had higher levels of extrinsic motivation than male students.
The study suggests that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation should be considered interrelated, as motivation plays a crucial role in students’ success in learning English. Future research is recommended with a larger sample size and across other educational institutions nationwide, using a variety of statistical analyses. Qualitative and mixed-methods designs are also encouraged for future studies.
