Abstract

This research report presents an overview of current studies on Cambodian students’ motivation toward English language learning, focusing on the case of Hun Neng Buddhist Primary School, Kampong Cham Town. The data were collected using a quantitative method. The aims of the study were to examine the participants’ levels of motivation and to explore the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. A total of 93 Buddhist monk students participated in the study.

The findings indicate that the Buddhist monk students were highly motivated to learn English, with a greater tendency toward extrinsic motivation than intrinsic. The study recommends fostering motivation both inside and outside the classroom. It is also suggested that future research be conducted with a larger sample size and employ additional statistical analyses in other educational settings. Furthermore, qualitative and mixed-method research designs are recommended for deeper insights.
