Students’ Difficulties in Learning English Speaking Skills at Prey Chhor Lower Secondary School

This research report presents an overview of current research on students’ difficulties in learning English speaking skills at the lower secondary school level. The case study focuses on grade 7 to 9 students learning English at PreyChhor Lower Secondary School in Kampong Cham Province. The data were collected using a qualitative method.
The aims of the study were to identify the difficulties that lower secondary school students face when learning to speak English and to explore appropriate solutions to these problems. The results showed that students encounter numerous challenges when attempting to speak English, including lack of vocabulary, poor grammar, pronunciation issues, reliance on their mother tongue, lack of self-confidence, anxiety, shyness, limited fluency, fear of making mistakes, and fear of judgment from classmates.
This study is valuable as it helps students recognize the obstacles affecting their English speaking proficiency. By understanding these difficulties, students can work to prevent them and enhance their speaking skills. Additionally, the study provides teachers with insights into the specific challenges their students face in English speaking.
Future researchers can build on this study by exploring related topics or focusing more deeply on effective solutions to help lower secondary school students overcome their difficulties in learning English speaking skills.
