Abstract

This research report provides an overview of current studies on the challenges students face when learning English across the four language skills at the National University of Cheasim Kamchaymear (NUCK), Kampong Cham. The case study focuses on second- and third-year students studying English at NUCK in Kampong Cham Province. Data were collected using a qualitative approach.

The study aimed to identify the challenges university students encounter when learning English and to explore appropriate solutions to the problems they face. The results indicated that students experience numerous difficulties in writing, reading, listening, and speaking. These challenges include limited vocabulary, poor grammar and pronunciation, lack of self-confidence, anxiety, shyness, limited fluency, and fear of making mistakes.

This study is valuable as it helps students recognize the key obstacles hindering their English language development. By clearly understanding these challenges, students can take proactive steps to overcome them, which is essential for their progress in English learning. Additionally, the findings provide useful insights for educators, enabling them to better understand the difficulties students face in the four language skills and to adapt their teaching strategies accordingly.

Future researchers can build upon this study by exploring related topics or more extensive aspects, particularly in identifying effective solutions to the challenges university students face when learning English in writing, reading, listening, and speaking.
