Abstract

One of the languages that has become widely used all over the world is English, and a great number of people from different countries use it as their primary language of communication. Further, it has been determined that the most important component that determines the outcomes of students' learning is the degree to which they are motivated to study English. Taking this into consideration, the current research conducted at a university in the province of Kampong Cham utilized a quantitative technique to determine the levels of motivation exhibited by students who were studying English as a foreign language. Twenty-two pupils filled out the questionnaire after receiving permission to do so from their respective school principals and English professors. As a consequence of this, the data suggest that the students who participated in the study were motivated to learn English more by their internal motivations than by external motivations. In addition, there are notable distinctions in the way male and female students perceive the same thing. To be more specific, the fact that students were driven to learn English by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors revealed that they are relatively motivated to perform so. On the other hand, because the survey study was carried out on a limited scale, it is recommended that future research make use of a bigger sample size as well as additional educational institutions located throughout Cambodia. In addition, qualitative and mixed-method designs are actively supported as alternative research approaches.
